1916April30: Germany and Austria begin daylight savings time by pushing the clock ahead one hour. Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy, Luxembourg, Manitoba, Netherlands, Norway, Nova Scotia, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, Tasmania soon followed suit and adopted it as well, with Britain following suit three weeks later, on May 21, 1916. Australia and Newfoundland began saving daylight in 1917 (Webexhibit).
