2001: In Honduras, Enersol Associates, Inc.’s The El Fortin project uses solar power to pump clean water into a large village tank. Villagers pay a flat monthly fee of $3.25 into a community bank account. The money is used for maintenance and repair of the solar powered water pump. The program won a 2001 Ashden Award. The Ashden Awards promote local sustainable energy solutions in the UK and the developing world (Ashden Awards, 2001).
