2005: KXN Nigeria Ltd has installed 189 solar-powered vaccine refrigerators in Northern Nigeria. A refrigerator can store up to 72,000 doses of polio vaccine. Photovoltaic modules power the refrigerators, and insulation reduces the need for electricity to keep the contents cool, and lead-acid batteries store electricity. KXN Nigeria, a private company, was established in 1999 by Anthony Ighodaro and Knowledge Exchange Network Ltd of the UK. The program won a 2005 Ashden Award. The Ashden Awards promote local sustainable energy solutions in the UK and the developing world (Ashden Awards, 2005).
