2006Oct30: Climate change inaction could lead to economic upheaval.

2006Oct30: A report on global warming created by Sir Nicholas Stern is released. The Stern Review says that global warming could result in melting glaciers, rising sea levels, food emergencies, water scarcity, heat waves, and disease. The report says that richer nations must pay more than poor nations to limit emissions output. The report also says that poor countries will be hit earliest and hardest. Stern’s report says that taking on climate change is a pro-growth strategy (CNN, 2006). Read the Stern Review http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/sternreview_index.htm

Connection to the 2007 IPCC Report on Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability: “Effects of temperature increases have been documented in the following systems (medium confidence): effects on agricultural and forestry management at Northern Hemisphere higher latitudes, such as earlier spring planting of crops, and alterations in disturbance regimes of forests due to fires and pests; some aspects of human health, such as heat-related mortality in Europe, infectious disease vectors in some areas, and allergenic pollen in Northern Hemisphere high and mid-latitudes; some human activities in the Arctic (e.g., hunting and travel over snow and ice) and in lower- elevation alpine areas (such as mountain sports)” (IPCC, 2007).
