2007: Wheat prices rose more than 60% in 2007 in Afghanistan. 2.5 million Afghanis cannot afford the price of wheat, according to the UN World Food Programme. Basic food costs have been rising because of high energy and grain costs, climate change effects, and biofuel demand (BBC, 2008).
