2008Jan8: Researchers at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute report that biofuels may not be superior to fossil fuels if their production results in environmental destruction, pollution, and damage to human health. The researchers also argue for the need to think flexibly about the use of biofuels. “Different biofuels vary enormously in how eco-friendly they are. We need to be smart and promote the right biofuels,” said William Laurance, a staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (IHT, 2008).
