2009July22: Safe winter chill in California's Central Valley and Chilling Hours Model.

2009July22: From Climatic Changes Lead to Declining Winter Chill for Fruit and Nut Trees in California during 1950–2099: “Figure 3. Safe winter chill in California’s Central Valley in 1950, 2000, 2041–2060 and 2080–2099, calculated with the Chilling Hours Model. Future winter chill was quantified using the A2 IPCC greenhouse gas emissions scenario” (Luedeling, Zhang, & Girvetz, 2009). “Climate change is not just about sea-level rise and polar bears. It is about our food security. Climate change may make conditions less favorable to grow the crops we need to feed ourselves,” said UC Davis researcher Eike Luedeling, lead author of the article (Los Angeles Times, 2009).
