2009July27: Cash for Clunkers, a US government program, officially starts. The $1 billion program offers $3,500 to $4,500 to consumers who trade in a car that has a combined EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18 mpg or less, for a new, more fuel efficient vehicle (US News and World Report, 2009).
